How would using an Open resource for a text affect intergration?
Dr. Aurelia Rocha (she/her/hers)
21:16
Hi Laura, this session is about textbook integration in Canvas. But there will be a session on OER on 11/5
Dr. Aurelia Rocha (she/her/hers)
22:01
Or perhaps, I am not understanding your question? Would you please clarify?
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
22:09
Hey Laura, it really depends on what the OER offers. Some of them like OpenStax offer a seamless integration like I will show with McGraw-Hill. Some, you will be able to build in via files/links. Its actually a little more freeing to use an OER.
Dr. Aurelia Rocha (she/her/hers)

@Jeigh - thanks for the rescue!
Laura Mery
22:29
Yes, I was wondering about OpenStax.
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
23:08
I don't know a lot of about how OpenStax works, but my understanding is that you can do something similar to what I will show with a combo of them and Sapling or another homework service
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
24:28
We are integrating McGraw hill text assigning reading assignments where they toggle between reading and answering questions for a grade.
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
25:32
That is what Chemistry uses as well Melissa :)

Hello Laura, I know that some instructors at Northeast Lakeview use OpenStax for their EDUC-1300 courses. It's pretty easy to integrate however, they had to go through their dean of their intent to ensure it meets the discipline-specific guidelines. What they did was to sign up for a free OpenStax account and was able to download and save the resources and then attributed the source in their course.

29:23
Does it automatically put the grades back into Canvas or do you have to do that manually?
Kerri Morgan
29:50
Grades automatically roll into Canvas. It’s great!!
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
30:35
Hey Linda, That is also dependent on the publisher. McGraw-Hill does for some assignments, but for others I need to go in and push the grades to Canvas (a single button click). I do know that some service require you to download the grades and move them to Canvas manually.
Laura Mery
30:46
I already have a Pearson module for the course text book, would it be possible to add OpenStax as an additional resource in Canvas?
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
32:43
I use McGraw hills connect and all grades automatically push to canvas
Amy Gates
32:43
Hello Laura, I'm pretty sure you can use it as an additional resource. The OpenStax example I saw was not interactive, so they built their own activities from that resource.
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
32:53
I am just not completely sure about that Laura. OpenStax is fully in Commons already.
Laura Mery
33:07
Thank you.
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
33:33
That’s weird I’m not having that issue with connect
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
34:29
Melissa, it was not the integrated readings, those were automatically entered. It was the homework/problem sets that had to be manually closed *shrug* its actually a good thing. Allows for late work where it previously did not.
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
48:49
Using the smart book feature is how we get students to read the textbook
Dr. Aurelia Rocha (she/her/hers)
49:45
Reminds me of the listening feature that Norton has - makes listening and answering questions about the excerpts interesting and interactive.
Kerri Morgan
53:14
We used to use McGraw Hill and Connect, and they have some very similar features to the Norton text.
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
53:29
That nice. How do you push it out to so many courses?
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
54:42
Changing dates in connect is so easy!!! I love it
Kerri Morgan
55:03
We also copy assignments every semester. It’s a big time saver!
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
56:07
That’s right, you can share assignments from connect to other instructors
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
56:28
I forgot about that
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:00:08
When we looked into supplemental companies the cost was more then doing IMD with publisher and their interactive assignments
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:01:11
Ok I allow late Assignments with a percent deduction
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:01:43
I understand- me too
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:04:52
Thank you. Sometimes we get pushback so it’s nice to see we are on same page with other departments.
Mx. Jeremy Motley (they/she/he)
01:05:06
Very much so!
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:05:45
Yes it is

Sometimes Financial Aid doesn’t cover IM fees
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:07:08
I love the ease of giving extensions. There’s a huge difference between the different platforms. There is also a read Anya era app for connect.
Melissa Sutherland-Hunt
01:07:37
Read Anywhere App- they can read offline.
