To empower and equip first-generation college students in the first two years of college that challenge thinking, encourage academic growth, and create positive, long-lasting student/teacher relationships. Emphasis is placed on active, inquiry-based, and collaborative strategies where a safe, culturally enriching space is fostered for equity in learning and accommodates diverse learners. Special importance is also placed on the development of student learning outcomes which includes motivational learning, marketable skills, leadership skills, and degree/career assessment and discovery. Persistence and retention is the goal that leads to the transfer to a 4-year institution and ultimate attainment of a Bachelor’s Degree. Intentional and purposeful college preparation, through the culture of the academic family, will lead students to opportunities to succeed and ultimately reach their academic goals and dreams.
Sylvia Phillips

Do the instructors meet separately to coordinate their lesson plans?
Jianxia Zhang
38:40
Thank you for the speakers! Sorry I have to leave for some department issue. I will join the next session.
Jeanette Bunch
39:07
@Sylvia Yes, that is ideal but it does not always happen!
Sylvia Phillips
41:10
Thank you, Ms. Bunch!

Dr. Joan Jaimes
45:01
Hi Melissa. Yes, we will upload the link to our Teaching and Learning site
Sylvia Phillips
45:35

Sylvia Phillips
48:21
Are we required to complete the graduate credits to teach for Ascender?
Dr. Joan Jaimes
48:31
No, Sylvia.
Dr. Joan Jaimes
48:51
The graduate credits through UT are an option, not a requirement.
Sylvia Phillips
49:11
I do not object to the graduate credits, but obtaining the graduate credits takes time.
Dr. Joan Jaimes
50:01
The time spent is the same; faculty who participate in the training can choose to pay to also receive graduate credits for the same training.
Elissa Gutierrez
50:24
Especially with low enrollment...we make sure to fill classes with our ALC professors first!
Karen Briere
50:45
My apologies if I missed it but how do students learn about the Ascender program?
Jeanette Bunch
50:46
@Sylvia, you are not required to get the credit
Sylvia Phillips
51:00
So you are adding MWF classes?
Dr. Joan Jaimes
51:25
Great question Karen! Elissa and other advisors actively recruit first time in college students and inform them about Ascender.
